What really matters is supercompensation. What happens is that you begin with a certain degree of fitness, you lose capability through training (wearing down the muscles) and while recovering, but then your body compensates for that cycle by preparing itself for that level of training next time. If you don’t push as hard, or harder, you’ll eventually develop a lower degree of result.
